In October 2017, the researchers discovered a new asteroid: then it was away from us, 85 times the distance from Earth to the Moon. Observations showed that the celestial body flew to us from outside the solar system, thus becoming the first discovered interstellar object flying through the solar system. This, as well as its elongated cigar-shaped shape, attracted much attention to the object. Some said that this form is suitable for space travel and in theory the object can be a ship of extraterrestrial civilization. The asteroid was given the name “1I / Oumuamua” , which in Hawaiian can be translated as “scout” or “messenger from afar”.
There is no evidence that there is an artificial object before us. Now, however, it is impossible to state with certainty and its natural origin. That’s why the researchers from the Breakthrough Listen project intend to test both versions. Observations for the asteroid will be carried out with the help of the Green Bank telescope, which is located in Virginia (USA). It should be noted that it is among the world’s largest full-swing parabolic radio telescopes.
Researchers will analyze the detected object for transmission of radio signals. The first session will take ten hours: it intends to divide not four parts by the periods of rotation of the asteroid. Experts will listen to the “guest” in four frequency ranges, from 1 to 12 gigahertz. According to scientists, regardless of the origin of the object, the information received will be of great value for science, since no such detailed observations of this object have been conducted yet.
Breakthrough Listen is a program of Russian businessman Yuri Milner, aimed at finding an intelligent life outside the Earth. It is designed for ten years. Breakthrough Listen is part of the large-scale program of Breakthrough Initiatives, which also explores issues related to hypothetical extraterrestrial life. It also includes the now famous program Breakthrough Starshot, which aims to send miniature spaceships to the Alpha Centauri system.
